Harry Potter Doesn't Have the Corner on Magic

(OVIEDO, FL. August 2005) Harry Potter may be a wizard in training but Linda S. Day a.k.a. Grandma has got magic within her scissors which when met with a piece of paper creates art. Since the creation of paper by the Chinese over 2000 years ago people have been creating artistic pieces out of paper for fun and decorations. Why even Hans Christian Anderson, a well known writer of fairy tales such as "The Little Mermaid," and "The Ugly Duckling" always carried paper and scissors in his pocket to delight the children he told stories to with amazing paper cutting art.

Grandma in the same tradition as Hans Christian Anderson carries scissors and paper in one of the many special pockets in her apron. With her magic scissors in hand she tells stories and turns ordinary paper into frogs, castles, butterflies and much more. Day, a professional storyteller, with StoryMasters, and an artist says, "all I need to do is close my eyes and see the image in my mind and the scissors begin cutting out the design as if by magic." For years Grandma has traveled the country with her magic scissors entertaining thousands of children as she told stories. Recently Grandma put her paper cutting designs into a book called Grandma’s Magic Scissors (ISBN 1-890905-68-2, Day to Day Enterprises) to help others enjoy this ancient art.

It is true that just as Harry Potter has learned over the years that magic doesn’t appear just from flicking a wand, it comes from practice and experience. Grandma says, "true magic comes from within as we learn to put into practice what we have learned and begin to believe in ourselves." You can see Grandma and her Magic Within tour on September 12 at Barnes and Nobles at the Altamonte Springs Mall. Grandma challenges children of all ages to come and experience the magic within their own scissors as she demonstrates the process of fold-and-cut art and weaves magic through her story
