Hidden WWII Diary to be introduced by Local Author
(Sarasota, FL, February 2006) Jay Coffman took a big risk in keeping a diary during his time as an infantryman in the South Pacific during World War II. Living in a combat zone during the war meant that it was a court martial offense to keep a diary, yet Jay wrote of his experiences on scraps of paper and hid them in his personal effects. It wasn’t till years later that Jay’s nephew, Tom Fulks found the missing diary and decided that others might benefit from his uncle’s eyewitness account of the everyday life of a soldier in Guadalcanal during WWII.
On Saturday, February 4th Fulks will be discussing the book Under Wraps: one soldier’s hidden diary of WWII at the Sarasota Barnes and Noble starting at 2 PM. The books includes Jay Coffman’s unedited diary and snapshots along with a section of historical notes and footnotes concerning World War II added by Fulks. The book is fully referenced and indexed suitably for scholars, researchers, and historians. Following the discussion Fulks will be available to sign copies of the book, answer questions, and challenge people to test their knowledge of WWII trivia
Historical Media Reviews says, "Coffman left behind a volume that will give historians and readers an intimate look of those horrific events in the Pacific conflict. It’s not only a record of combat, but gives one the inner feelings of men at the front. We are not only confronted with Coffman in a war zone but we are introduced to Coffman’s home life, the girl next door, and the doubt of seeing her and his family again. Being an eyewitness to history is leaving behind a legacy. In this case, Coffman has accomplished just that with his diary that is worth reading" Jay Coffman’s diary is fascinating and touching. Readers who lived through World War II will be reminded of that unique time.
